Grown at high elevations between 1,600 and 2,000 meters above sea level, this coffee thrives in mineral-dense red volcanic soil, benefiting from cool mountain breezes that promote slow cherry development. The "AB" designation represents a combination of screen size 16 (Grade A) and screen size 15 (Grade B) green coffee beans, forming a substantial and flavor-packed portion of Nyeri's specialty harvest. Fully double-fermented using clean mountain river water and sun-dried on raised African beds, Nyeri Arabica AB delivers exceptional complexity, characterized by lively citrus acidity, bright notes of red currant, ripe blackberry, floral honey, and a smooth, medium-full body.

Nyeri Arabica AB exemplifies the world-class quality and dynamic flavor profile characteristic of Central Kenya's most famous coffee-growing origin. Sourced from smallholder farmer cooperatives located across the high-altitude ridges of Nyeri County, this coffee is cultivated in the fertile gap between the eastern slopes of the Aberdare Range and the western slopes of snow-capped Mount Kenya. Agriculture in this region is conducted on small family plots at elevations ranging from 1,600 to 2,000 meters above sea level. These high altitudes create cooler ambient temperatures and daily mist, extending the maturation period of the coffee cherries and allowing maximum time for sugars and complex organic acids to accumulate inside the seed.

The local terroir is defined by rich, deep-red volcanic soils (Nitosols) that are naturally abundant in organic nutrients and essential minerals. Combined with bi-modal seasonal rainfall—the long rains from March to May and the short rains from October to December—Nyeri provides ideal hydrological cycles for Coffea arabica. Farmers predominantly tend traditional heirloom varieties such as SL-28 and SL-34, celebrated for their sparkling acidity and deep fruit character, alongside resilient cultivars like Ruiru 11 and Batian.

Under the grading parameters established by the Coffee Directorate of Kenya and traded through the Nairobi Coffee Exchange, the "AB" grade is a combination of two physical screen sizes: screen 16 (Grade A) and screen 15 (Grade B), corresponding to bean diameters of 6.00 to 6.80 millimeters. While slightly smaller in size than the AA screen, AB beans comprise a major portion of a farm’s top-quality yield. Due to their compact cellular structure and high physical density, Nyeri AB lots offer incredible flavor concentration, high sweetness, and consistent heat absorption during roasting.

Processing follows Kenya's world-renowned double-fermentation wet milling method. Smallholders meticulously handpick only fully ripe crimson cherries and transport them to regional wet mills (factories) on the day of harvest. The cherries are pulped, density-sorted in water channels, and subjected to a 24-to-36-hour dry fermentation process to break down the sticky mucilage layer. Following a secondary soak in clean mountain water, the parchment coffee is laid out on raised wooden African drying beds. Over 12 to 18 days of solar drying, workers continuously turn the parchment by hand to ensure uniform drying until it reaches the targeted moisture content of 10.5% to 11.5%.

In the cup, Nyeri Arabica AB delivers a lively, structured, and refreshing experience. The aroma opens with intense notes of orange blossom, jasmine, and crushed red berries. On the palate, it features a crisp, sparkling citric and malic acidity reminiscent of pink grapefruit and green apple, balanced by deep sweetness resembling cane sugar, honey, and ripe blackberry. The mouthfeel is smooth, structured, and medium-full, concluding with a clean, lingering berry-toned finish.

Nyeri Arabica AB shines under light to medium roasting profiles, which maintain its bright fruit acids and floral aromatics. For brewing, pour-over methods like the Hario V60, Chemex, or Kalita Wave highlight its juicy acidity, red berry clarity, and delicate floral high notes. When brewed in an AeroPress or automatic drip brewer, its caramel sweetness, rounded body, and rich citrus notes come to the forefront.

FAQs

What does the "AB" grade mean in Nyeri Arabica AB coffee?

The "AB" grade represents a combination of screen size 16 (Grade A, 6.80mm) and screen size 15 (Grade B, 6.00mm) beans under Kenya’s official sorting system. Although physically smaller than AA grade beans, AB beans represent a large portion of high-altitude cherry yield and offer high flavor concentration and sweetness.

How do the growing conditions in Nyeri influence the taste of AB coffee?

Nyeri’s high elevation (1,600–2,000 meters) and cool climate slow down cherry maturation, encouraging dense sugar development inside the seed. Combined with nutrient-dense red volcanic soil, these factors yield a coffee with sparkling citrus acidity, vibrant red berry notes, and exceptional cup clarity.

What is the main difference between Nyeri Arabica AA and Nyeri Arabica AB?

The primary difference is bean size and screen classification. AA beans are larger (screen sizes 17 and 18), whereas AB beans consist of screen sizes 15 and 16. In terms of taste, while AA often boasts heavy body and deep winey blackcurrant tones, AB frequently delivers a brighter, crisp acidity with high floral and citrus notes.

How is Nyeri Arabica AB coffee processed?

It is processed using Kenya's traditional double-fermentation wet (washed) method. Handpicked ripe cherries are pulped, fermented in fresh mountain water to dissolve mucilage, washed clean, soaked, and sun-dried on raised African drying beds prior to dry milling and mechanical sorting.

What is the best way to brew Nyeri Arabica AB?

Manual pour-over devices such as the Hario V60 or Chemex best highlight Nyeri AB's vibrant acidity, delicate floral aroma, and juicy berry notes. It also performs exceptionally well in an AeroPress or drip coffee maker, bringing out a smooth body and rich cane-sugar sweetness.
