Overview
Nyeri Arabica PB features the rare and intensely flavorful Peaberry bean cultivated on the high, nutrient-dense volcanic slopes of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range in Nyeri County.
Central Region | Coffee Grade PB (Peaberry)
Grown at elevations ranging between 1,600 and 2,100 meters above sea level, this specialty coffee develops slowly under cool mountain temperatures and distinct dual-monsoon rainfall cycles. While typical coffee cherries produce two flat-sided seeds, a natural botanical anomaly causes approximately 5% to 10% of the harvest to yield a single, small, round "peaberry" seed. This solitary seed absorbs the complete nutritional intake of the cherry, resulting in high physical density and rich sugar concentrations. Double-fermented using fresh mountain water and sun-dried on raised African beds, Nyeri Arabica PB delivers an extraordinarily complex cup characterized by explosive blackcurrant, bright lime acidity, floral hibiscus, and a silky, dark-chocolate finish.

Nyeri Arabica PB is one of the most dynamic single-origin selections originating from Central Kenya’s world-renowned coffee-growing region. Sourced from smallholder farmer cooperatives situated along the high-altitude ridges of Nyeri County—sandwiched between the eastern wall of the Aberdare Range and the snow-capped peak of Mount Kenya—this coffee thrives in an exceptional environment. Cultivation takes place on steep mountain plots at elevations between 1,600 and 2,100 meters above sea level. These extreme altitudes feature drastic diurnal temperature shifts, with cold mountain nights and warm daytime sun, extending the cherry growth cycle and concentrating natural sugars and complex organic acids within the seed.
The natural landscape of Nyeri is heavily defined by its deep, porous, red volcanic clay soil (Nitosols), which provides optimal drainage and a rich mineral base required for healthy root systems and dense fruit development. Smallholder farmers cultivate traditional heirloom Arabica varieties—primarily SL-28 and SL-34, celebrated for their vibrant phosphoric acidity and intense fruit characteristics—alongside resilient cultivars like Ruiru 11 and Batian.
The "PB" designation refers to "Peaberry" (also known as caracol). In standard coffee development, two hemispherical seeds grow flat face to flat face inside the coffee cherry. However, in a small fraction of the crop, only one ovule undergoes fertilization, causing a single, oval, pea-shaped seed to expand freely without flat sides. Because this lone peaberry receives 100% of the nutrient payload and sugars produced by the tree for that specific fruit, it develops superior physical density and intense flavor concentration. During dry milling, these round seeds are mechanically separated using slotted screen sieves.
Beyond its sensory qualities, Nyeri Arabica PB’s physical structure offers distinct roasting advantages. The smooth, round shape of the peaberry enables it to roll effortlessly inside roasting drums, allowing for even heat distribution and precise sugar caramelization.
Processing follows Kenya's gold-standard double-fermentation wet milling method. Handpicked, ripe red cherries are delivered on harvest day to local washing stations (factories). The cherries are mechanically pulped, density-sorted in fresh water channels, and fermented in concrete vats for 24 to 36 hours to break down the natural mucilage layer. Following a secondary clean-water soak, the parchment coffee is laid out on raised wooden African drying beds. Over 12 to 18 days of solar drying, workers continuously turn the coffee by hand to ensure uniform drying until it reaches the targeted 10.5% to 11.5% moisture level.
In the cup, Nyeri Arabica PB offers an explosive, multi-layered tasting experience. The aroma opens with striking floral hibiscus, dark cocoa, and sweet citrus blossom. On the palate, it exhibits a vibrant, sparkling citric and phosphoric acidity reminiscent of fresh blackcurrant, tart cranberry, and pink grapefruit, balanced by deep, brown-sugar sweetness and stone-fruit complexity. The mouthfeel is sleek, viscous, and syrupy, concluding with a long, clean, dark-chocolate and red-wine finish.

Nyeri Arabica PB excels under light-to-medium roast profiles that highlight its lively fruit acids and floral aromatics. Manual pour-over devices such as the Hario V60 or Chemex showcase its crystalline blackcurrant clarity, sparkling acidity, and floral notes. When prepared in an AeroPress or as a single-origin espresso shot, its dense cellular structure yields a viscous body, rich crema, and pronounced dark fruit sweetness.

Nyeri Arabica PB is a specialty coffee grade consisting of peaberries—a natural botanical variation where a coffee cherry produces a single round seed instead of two flat-sided beans. Because this single seed absorbs all the nutrients of the cherry, combined with Nyeri’s extreme elevations (up to 2,100m), it results in a denser bean with concentrated sugars and vibrant flavor intensity.
While Nyeri AA and AB are famous for their bold structure, heavy body, and intense blackcurrant notes, Nyeri PB often delivers a punchier, brighter, and more concentrated profile. Expect intense blackcurrant, tart cranberry, and citrus acidity balanced by sweet cocoa, floral hibiscus, and a sleek, syrupy mouthfeel.
Peaberry beans are naturally round and smooth without flat edges. This physical shape allows them to roll smoothly inside a coffee roaster's drum, ensuring exceptionally uniform heat transfer and precise control over sugar caramelization during the roast cycle.
It undergoes Kenya's traditional double-fermentation wet (washed) method. Handpicked ripe cherries are pulped, fermented in fresh mountain water to dissolve mucilage, washed clean, soaked, and sun-dried on raised African beds before dry milling separates the peaberries by shape and size.
Pour-over methods such as the Hario V60 or Chemex best accentuate its sparkling acidity, floral aromas, and vibrant blackcurrant clarity. For a heavier body and concentrated fruit sweetness, an AeroPress or single-origin espresso extraction works exceptionally well.
