Overview
Kiambu Arabica PB showcases the rare, prized Peaberry bean harvested from historic high-altitude estates and smallholder farms in Kiambu County, along the southern slopes of the Aberdare Range.
Central Region | Coffee Grade PB (Peaberry)
Cultivated at elevations between 1,500 and 1,900 meters above sea level in deep, mineral-rich red volcanic soil, this coffee benefits from cool highland nights and ideal equatorial sunshine. Occurring in roughly 5% to 10% of the harvest, these single, round peaberry seeds absorb the complete nutrient payload of the coffee cherry, resulting in superior density and concentrated natural sugars. Processed through traditional double-fermentation wet milling and sun-dried on raised African beds, Kiambu Arabica PB offers outstanding roast uniformity and a vibrant cup profile. Expect a highly aromatic coffee featuring bright tangerine acidity, sweet black cherry, floral honeysuckle, and a smooth, dark-chocolate finish.

Cultivated in the fertile red volcanic soils of Central Kenya, Kiambu Arabica C provides an approachable expression of the region's historic specialty terroir. While sorted into a smaller bean grade, it is grown on the exact same high-altitude trees as the renowned AA and AB lots, offering exceptional origin clarity.
Delicate Flavor Profile: Highlights a light, tea-like body with crisp citrus acidity, subtle honeysuckle sweetness, and a clean, refreshing floral finish.
High-Altitude Terroir: Grown between 1,500 and 1,900 MASL, benefiting from cool mountain nights and nutrient-dense volcanic soil that concentrate natural sugar
Classic Highland Varieties: Produced from Kenya’s celebrated SL28 and SL34 heritage cultivars paired with disease-resistant Batian and Ruiru 11.
Meticulous Wet Processing: Fully double-fermented and sun-dried on raised African beds to ensure pristine cup clarity and uniform quality.
High-Value Single Origin: Offers roasters an accessible, cost-effective entry point to authentic Kiambu single-origin coffee without compromising on origin character.
Kiambu Arabica PB represents one of the most concentrated and flavor-packed specialty offerings originating from Kenya's historic coffee-growing heartland. Situated directly north of Nairobi along the southern foothills of the Aberdare Range, Kiambu County holds a legendary position in East African coffee history. Farms and cooperatives in this region operate at elevated altitudes spanning 1,500 to 1,900 meters above sea level. These high-altitude conditions foster cold mountain night temperatures and warm, temperate days, extending the cherry growth cycle and encouraging dense sugar synthesis and complex organic acid development within the seed.
The foundation of Kiambu’s terroir is its famously deep, porous red volcanic soil (Nitosols), which is naturally rich in organic matter, iron, and nitrogen. Supported by bi-modal seasonal rainfall—the long rains from March to May and the short rains from October to December—the trees thrive under optimal hydrological conditions. Farmers cultivate classic heirloom Arabica varieties, primarily SL-28 and SL-34, celebrated for their vibrant phosphoric acidity and intense fruit characteristics, alongside resilient cultivars like Ruiru 11 and Batian.
The "PB" designation stands for "Peaberry" (also referred to as caracol). In standard coffee development, two hemispherical seeds grow face-to-face inside the cherry. However, in a small fraction of the crop, only a single ovule undergoes fertilization, causing a lone, round, pea-shaped seed to develop without flat sides. Because this single peaberry receives 100% of the nutrient payload and sugars provided by the parent tree for that fruit, it exhibits higher physical density and concentrated flavor compounds. During dry milling, these round seeds are mechanically separated using specialized slotted screens.
Beyond its sensory qualities, Kiambu Arabica PB offers significant physical benefits for roasters. Its smooth, round shape enables the beans to roll continuously inside a roasting drum, facilitating uniform heat absorption and precise sugar caramelization throughout the roast cycle.
Processing follows Kenya's gold-standard double-fermentation wet milling method. Selective handpicking ensures that only fully ripe, crimson cherries reach local wet mills (factories). The cherries are pulped, density-sorted in water channels, and fermented in concrete tanks for 24 to 36 hours to break down the natural mucilage layer. Following a secondary clean-water soak, the parchment is transferred to raised wooden African drying beds. Over 12 to 18 days of solar drying, workers continuously turn the coffee by hand to ensure uniform moisture loss until it reaches the targeted 10.5% to 11.5% moisture level.
In the cup, Kiambu Arabica PB delivers an energetic and highly structured sensory profile. The aroma opens with intense notes of floral honeysuckle, jasmine, and dark cocoa. On the palate, it exhibits a sparkling, refined tangerine and red currant acidity, balanced by a deep, juicy sweetness of dark cherry, stone fruit, and brown sugar. The mouthfeel is sleek and syrupy, concluding with a long, clean finish of dark chocolate and subtle spice.

Kiambu Arabica PB performs magnificently under light-to-medium roast profiles, preserving its lively citrus acidity and delicate floral high notes. For manual brewing, filter devices like the Hario V60, Chemex, or Kalita Wave showcase its vibrant fruit clarity and floral sweetness. When prepared in an AeroPress or as a single-origin espresso shot, its high bean density and natural sugar concentration yield a viscous body, rich crema, and intense dark-fruit sweetness.

Kiambu Arabica PB is a specialty coffee grade consisting of peaberries—a natural botanical variation where a coffee cherry produces a single round seed instead of two flat-sided beans. Cultivated in Kiambu County, these small, dense, round beans are sorted during dry milling and prized for their sweet, concentrated flavor.
Peaberry beans are naturally round and smooth without flat surfaces or sharp edges. This physical structure allows them to roll smoothly inside a coffee roaster's drum, ensuring exceptionally uniform heat transfer and consistent sugar caramelization during the roast.
While Kiambu AA and AB offer a bold structure with heavy dark-plum and chocolate depth, Kiambu PB presents a punchier, brighter, and more concentrated profile. Expect vibrant tangerine acidity, sweet black cherry, floral honeysuckle, and a sleek, dark-chocolate finish.
Peaberries occur naturally in roughly 5% to 10% of any coffee harvest worldwide. Because they must be mechanically separated from standard flat beans using specialized screen sieves, Kiambu PB lots are produced in limited quantities per harvest season.
Pour-over methods (such as Hario V60, Kalita Wave, or Chemex) best accentuate its sparkling citrus acidity, floral aromatics, and berry clarity. It also brews exceptionally well in an AeroPress or as a single-origin espresso shot, where its natural sugars produce a dense, sweet body and rich crema.
